Is laser hair removal painful? Let’s talk!

If you aren’t entirely sure what laser hair removal is or how it works, then you have come to the right place. Having provided countless treatments of laser hair removal in Oxford, we are experts in the cosmetic procedure and want to share our knowledge with you. Before gaining recognition for its ability to successfully remove hair, laser hair removal was performed experimentally for around 20 years. It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that laser hair removal became commercially available, and is now offered at most beauty clinics, including our beauty clinic in Oxford. The method of laser hair removal is very simple – a powerful laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) is used on areas of your body where you want to remove unwanted hair. Laser hair removal works as the light source effortlessly heats and destroys your hair follicles – disrupting hair growth. For the best results, we have found that a course of laser hair removal treatment is most effective as it ensures all hairs are caught over differing cycle growths. If the idea of laser hair removal appeals to you, but you have been put off by rumours of the process being painful, then we have some good news…

1. Laser hair removal really hurts

Myth number one is probably the most common misconception of laser hair removal, but we can confirm it is absolutely not true! While we do agree that the idea of having a laser destroying your hair follicles sounds daunting, it is surprisingly not painful. Now, we don’t want to sell you dreams and say the process is completely painless as we all have varying pain thresholds. However, as with most things, the first time you do it will probably be the worst and the time you are most likely to feel any sort of uncomfortable sensation. The majority of people describe the feeling of laser hair removal as a tingling sensation, but not necessarily painful. To put it into perspective, compared to other hair removal methods such as waxing, laser hair removal is an undeniably less painful and more pleasant experience. Although we cannot guarantee that your laser hair removal procedure will be 100% pain-free, there are many options which can make the process more comfortable. Many of the devices used for the hair removal have a built-in cool-air fan which, when turned on, will help soothe any irritation. Specially formulated gels and creams or adjusting the settings of the laser will also help if you are experiencing any discomfort.

2. Laser hair removal doesn’t work on dark skin

In the past, laser hair removal was not catered for people with darker skin as the more melanin in your skin, the more prone you are to burns. However, thanks to the growing awareness of inclusivity and technology advancements, laser hair removal is now an option for people of all complexions. If you do have darker skin, we suggest double-checking that your beauty clinic will be using the most up-to-date systems as older versions may not feature the technology necessary to remove hair on darker skin effectively. The best machine to look out for when deciding where to have your laser hair removal treatment is Nd:YAG, as the wavelengths of this laser go deeper into the skin than a diode. This is advantageous for people with a dark complexion as the laser can successfully bypass the pigmentation without causing any pain or discomfort. If you have dark skin and are still cautious of laser hair removal, take a look at Glamour’s guide which not only tells you what lasers to look for, but also how much you can expect to spend, how to prepare properly and what to do post-treatment.

3. Laser hair removal takes too long

In comparison to shaving for the rest of your life to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal is considerably less time-consuming. The actual procedure time varies depending on what area of the body you are having your hair removed. For example, a session of laser hair removal under the arms takes less than a minute, but larger areas such as your legs or back may take slightly longer. However, what discourages people from laser hair removal is the fact it is not the case of one treatment and you’re done. Typically, it takes around 4-6 sessions of laser hair removal to see any results, and it is advised to wait six weeks between each treatment. So, although the entire process may take a few months to be fully completed, the results are far more long term than other hair removal method.

4. Laser hair removal is expensive

Initially, you may find the price of laser hair removal quite off-putting as it seems like a large sum of money to pay all at once. However, you need to think of the money you spend on laser hair removal as a long term investment. This hair removal method works out to be significantly more effective than continuously buying razors for the foreseeable future. You must also take into consideration the area which you will be having your hair removed. As previously stated, certain areas of your body will only need a few minutes of treatment, while others will take longer. As a result, the areas which require less treatment time will cost less. 5. Laser hair removal is not safe

Although having lasers coming into contact with your skin sounds quite dangerous, there are, in fact, no long-term health risks associated with the procedure. The laser used in the treatment simply attracts the pigments in the hair follicles without targeting anything else. This makes the process extra-safe as any surrounding tissue is left unharmed. So, as long as a fully-trained practitioner is carrying out the treatment, your safety is not at risk. However, you should be aware that some people may suffer from minor side effects after the procedure. To prevent this from happening, you should ensure your dermatologist tests the laser on a small patch of skin to see how it reacts before implementing the treatment on a larger area of your body. We pride ourselves on putting our client’s health and safety at the forefront of all treatments, which is why at our beauty clinic in Milton Keynes, a mandatory patch test must be completed at least 24 hours before your first appointment.

6. Laser hair removal causes hair to grow denser and more frequently

This myth is interesting as laser hair removal actually does the complete opposite! Each treatment can effectively cause a reduction of between 10-25% in hair growth. After you have completed your course of treatments, any hair that does eventually regrow will be much finer and lighter. The chances of your hair regrowing more frequently and denser is very unlikely, but not entirely impossible. Paradoxical laser stimulation, otherwise known as hypertrichosis, is a very rare phenomenon which causes stronger hair regrowth. While there is no exact reason as to why this occurs, we can confirm it is extremely uncommon. In a study which looked at the effects of laser hair removal on 489 patients, it found that only 3 patients experience what was deemed to be paradoxical laser hair stimulation. Other than the rare case, laser hair removal is proven to reduce the number of unwanted hairs and, combined with regular top-up sessions will ensure your hair follicles do not regenerate.
