Every week, there seems to be a brand new hair treatment available, promising to rejuvenate and feed your hair with essential oils, when in fact, making your own natural DIY hair masks can be just as, if not more, beneficial, not to mention that massive chunk of money it’ll save you!

What Are Natural DIY Hair Masks?

Your hair goes through considerably more stress that your skin, constant styling, applying heat and regular washing are just some of the factors that contribute to dry, brittle hair. It is often a lot harder to notice when your hair is lacking moisture and hydration as the signs are less noticeable than those of damaged skin. In more cases than not, by the time you notice that your hair is damaged, it is too late, and there are minimal solutions available aside from cutting off the split and damaged ends, which can be incredibly frustrating when you’ve spent a long time growing your hair to the perfect length!

Of course, regularly trimming your hair will always be the most effective way of maintaining healthy locks, but scheduling time now and then to apply a hair mask can be extremely beneficial. Hair masks are created using only nourishing ingredients, which are kind to the follicles and are packed with hydrating qualities, simiarly to those you would find in facials. Just some of the most common ingredients include:

  • Honey
  • Avocado
  • Banana
  • Rosemary
  • Argan, Coconut or Avocado Oil

Many shampoos and conditioners promise a whole host of benefits, claiming that they will help you to achieve silky, smooth hair, but these benefits are often only short term. Whereas, hair masks have a more long-term effect because they slowly sink into your hair over time and results can be noticed after just one use.

What Are The Benefits Of Hair Masks?

Unless you are one of the very few lucky ones who can get away with washing their hair once a week or so, it is more than likely you wash your hair at least 2 or 3 times a week. Although we cannot deny that you can’t beat freshly washed hair, unfortunately, each time you wash, you strip your hair even more of its essential oils. Appling a hair mask a couple of times a week, particularly to coloured hair, slowly starts to replenish all of the lost nutrients, helping to achieve a natural shine.

Over time, your hair loses elasticity, which is the main causes of brittleness and split ends, forcing your hair to break. The natural ingredients in hair masks repair the hair, healing the damage and restoring elasticity, making it less likely to snap off.

Along with dry hair, also comes a dry scalp causing dandruff and often more severe skin conditions such as psoriasis. Taking time to massage the hair mask into your roots and scalp after application also helps to moisturise the scalp.

DIY Hair Mask Recipes

Some of these hair masks, at first, may look and sound rather unappealing, but we can guarantee that your hair will thank you for them!

Avocado and Banana

What you’ll need: 1 avocado, 1 banana and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Blend the ingredients together until you have a thick consistency, you may need to add more ingredients if the paste seems runny.

How to apply: Split your hair into sections and spread evenly from the roots to the tips until all sections are covered, leave to soak in for around 20 minutes.

Yoghurt and Honey

What you’ll need: Use the ratio of 2 tablespoons of natural yoghurt to 1 tablespoon of honey, depending on the length of your hair, you may need to make more. Mix into a smooth paste.

How to apply: Start from your roots and apply the mask downwards towards your ends, ensuring that your scalp is fully covered. Leave to soak in for up to 20 minutes and then wash using your regular shampoo and conditioner.

Coconut Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar

What you’ll need: 2 tablespoons of natural coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Carefully melt the coconut oil in a small pot over the stove, once melted, take off the heat and mix in the apple cider vinegar.

How to apply: This mask can be used on both dry and damp hair. Once the mask has cooled a little, is lukewarm and will not scold your scalp, apply to the hair from root to tip and massage into the scalp. Leave for up to 20 minutes and then wash as usual.

Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Aloe Vera and Lemon

What you’ll need: 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, 2 tablespoons of argan oil, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Melt the coconut oil in the same way as the previous recipe. Once melted, mix in the argan oil, then aloe vera and then the lemon juice. If you wanted to use fresh aloe vera rather than a shop brought gel, it would work just as well; you’ll just need to extract the gel from the leaf before making the mask.

How to apply: Massage the mask into freshly washed hair, ensuring that the hair is covered from root to tip. Once coated, pop on a shower cap so the hair can absorb all moisture and leave to soak for up to an hour then rinse off.

If you suffer from any scalp skin conditions that aggressively flare up or often cause sensitive skin, we always recommend to double check with your doctor before applying any new hair masks. This also applies if you have recently undergone a treatment such as scalp micro-pigmentation or a hair transplant, talk to a professional about what ingredients are safe to use.

When applying your DIY hair mask, if you find it tricky to ensure that all of your hair is covered, for example, if it is very thick, try using a wide-toothed comb to evening distribute the mask. For extra hydration, once applied, try wrapping your head in a hot towel. Heat makes the hair follicles expand and will absorb more moisture.
